Playstation 2 fans rejoice, it is finally happening – Sony have confirmed they’re actively working on PlayStation 2 emulation for the current-gen PlayStation 4.
Speculation began to surface that Sony were planning a rival to Xbox One’s backwards compatibility when the Star Wars Battlefront special edition PlayStation 4 shipped with 3 PlayStation 2 titles, apparently running on an emulator. Digital Foundry spotted that some games were using an emulated memory card – something previously ported classic titles have not used.
Sony have now officially confirmed the news:
We’re working on utilizing PlayStation 2 emulation technology to bring PlayStation 2 games forward to the current generation. We’ve nothing further to comment at this point in time.
