Between Holly Holm’s stunning upset victory over Ronda Rousey’s one week ago and the looming showdown between Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez last weekend, there is been lots of fight news around recently. So it seems fitting that, on Throwback Thursday, we look back to one of Mike Tyson’s early fights.
Iron Tyson became known for throwing lightning-fast, brutally punches — hence the name — and he helped establish that reputation as an amateur. Mike Tyson won 2 Junior Olympics gold medals before turning professional, including this one as a 15-year-old in ’81 over Joe Cortez, who went on to become a legendary boxing referee. The fight lasted just 9 seconds.
Just look at the decisive punch to the neck that ended it.
